I’ve stated before that clay is one of my favorite materials to work with due to its versatility. After buying a couple small succulents, I knew I wanted to do something different than past planter DIYs (seen here and here). I decided on sculpting planters out of clay. The best part is you can design these planters any way you want!
Materials
– Oven-Bake Clay
– Rolling Pin
– Wax Paper
– Cutting Tool
– Ball Tool
– Flower Cutter
– Texture Tool
– Cardboard
1. Start by rolling out your clay to a little more than 1/8″ thick. Cut out your rectangular cardboard template. (Mine was 7″ X 2.5″)
2. Trace and cut out any patterns you want to add to the clay planter.
3. Wrap the clay rectangle in a circle to create the planter shape. Use your finger to blend the edges together. Make sure there are no gaps.
4. Roll out the clay and place the clay cylinder on top. Cut around the cylinder to create the circular base for the planter. Blend the bottom circle onto the cylinder making sure there are no gaps! Make as many planters as you want. Use texturing tools to create patterns in the clay.
5. To make a flower, roll out the clay and use a flower cutter to cut out flower shapes. Use a ball tool to round and thin out the petals.
6. Stack the flower shapes on top of each other. Add three small balls to the center. Poke 2-3 holes at the bottom of your planters. Bake following the instructions on the clay wrapper.
7. After the clay has baked, glue the flower to the planter. Add your plants and you’re done!
