HOW TO DYE EASTER EGGS NATURALLY

03.29.18

I’m so happy with how today’s DIY turned out! I’ve been meaning to try natural dying for sometime now. No lie, I’ve been saving avocado skins for months and then never using them and having to throw them out. Well, I finally put them to use with this Easter DIY. I’ve read about how to dye Easter eggs naturally and decided to try it out with a few ingredients I already had at home. Read on to learn how I got these beautiful colors!

Recipes for Each Natural Dye

Avocado- Boil 4 cups of water with the skins of 6 avocados and 2 tablespoons of vinegar.
Grape Juice- One cup of grape juice mixed with 2 teaspoons of vinegar.
Paprika- Boil 2 cups of water and add 2 tablespoons of paprika and 2 tablespoons of vinegar.
Turmeric-Boil 2 cups of water and add 2 tablespoons of turmeric and 2 tablespoons of vinegar.
Green Tea- Boil 2 cups of water and steep with 4 bags of green tea and 2 tablespoons of vinegar.
Red Cabbage- Boil 4 cups of water and add half a head of red cabbage and mix with 2 tablespoons of vinegar.
Coffee- Brew 2 cups of coffee and add 1 tablespoon of vinegar.

After boiling ingredients, let mixtures cool completely. Remove the avocado skins, tea bags, and cabbage from the pots. Add in your eggs. For best results, let eggs soak overnight.

A few things I learned from natural egg dying….

– Red cabbage turns water a vibrant violet color and turn your eggs blue. Aside from the avocado, this was probably my favorite color!
– The coffee and paprika resulted in a similar color. Next time, I would add more paprika to my mixture.
– Vinegar helps the dye bond to the egg so don’t skip it!
– Try to get your eggs fully saturated. Some of mine poked out of the water a bit which resulted in bare spots or streaks.

And that’s how you dye Easter eggs naturally!
