diy inspo // metallic tattoos

As if I needed another reason to love gold. These temporary metallic tattoos have been popular with girls who like the idea of wearing jewelry at the beach, but don’t want to run the risk of losing it. The brand Flash Tattoos has had a big part in making the trend popular. Their tattoos last four to six days making it easy to change your look. Because I love recreating things I see on the internet, I’m currently dreaming up ways to DIY the look. Stay tuned!

  1. Just thinking out loud, but… I wonder if you could do this directly, with a cosmetic adhesive like spirit gum or benzoin tincture?

Benzoin tincture is a mix of plant resins and alcohol; among other things, it’s used by athletes to make bandages and sports tape stick to the skin better. You can get it at drug stores or sporting goods stores (sometimes it’s labeled “Compound Tincture of Benzoin” or “CTB”). A 2oz bottle is about US$10 and a little goes a long way. Spirit gum is similar, it’s pine resin in alcohol. This is what theatrical makeup artists use to glue on fake mustaches, fake noses, zombie skin, etc. It’s a *very* good adhesive, but possibly a little harder to find (try online, or maybe a Halloween/party store).

In both cases, you paint the stuff on, let it dry, and then stick whatever you want to stick. Which is very similar to how you use gold-leafing glue! So I’m thinking maybe you could paint/stencil your design right on your skin, and then gold-leaf it?? I imagine it would last a few days, just like the real thing. Worth a shot!

PS: Since these are plant resins, you should probably pre-test for allergy first. It’s pretty rare, especially with benzoin, but why risk it. (Rubbing alcohol removes both, if you need to take it off.)
